Jeans - 4 Basic Cuts

Maybe because I am in dire need of a new pair, this blog is all about jeans. Yay! Step into a Gap store and you will see that there are just way too many types of jeans to choose from, so I thought I'd lay out some basic cuts that are worth investing in. Then next time you're on the search for that perfect pair, you will know which ones to try on and which ones to not even bother with. Here are four types of jeans to get to know:

The Bootcut

Defining Characteristic: Narrow at the knee and flares out the ankle

This jean is typically worn with boots. It works well for people who are wanting a bit more emphasis on the hip. One thing that I strongly recommend is that the hem reaches almost all the way to the ground. You look way shorter and disproportionate if your jean is cut too short.

The Straight Leg

Defining Characteristic: Straight from knee to ankle

This cut works best with just about everybody. Well I guess I can't think of one situation where it doesn't work... so I'll call this the universal jean. It works so well because it achieves the one most wanted characteristic - it lengthens you. Creating a long line on your body makes you look taller and thinner. Just try it.

The Skinny Jean

Defining Characteristic: Narrows at the ankle

This jean really accentuates the curves, whether you have them or not. If you're trying to create a more hourglass shape or you want to emphasize your waist, then these are for you. I guess this is the jean that causes the most controversy because it can do wonders for you, or actually make you look wider (and top-heavy). My mom laughs at herself when she tries these on because she says it makes her look like she has chicken legs. : )

The Trouser Jean

Defining Characteristic: Fits from widest part of hip and goes straight down to the ground (also may have tabbed front and wider waistband like shown)

These are just like your pair of work trousers, but made in a dark-wash denim. I really like these because they, like the straight leg, are a cut that works well on everybody. They give the illusion of a longer leg, and help to camouflage a larger bottom half. I also like how these give a dressy casual look.

All in all, the right jean can really fill many gaps in your wardrobe and make you feel incredible!

Some final thoughts -
- I mentioned Gap at the beginning of the post: hint hint, that's my favorite place to buy jeans! I love it because they have sooo many styles and sizes, so please go there by all means!

- Dark washes tend to project a nicer feel, as opposed to lighter washes or faded jeans, but that depends on what you are trying to achieve.

- Please don't wear a jeans with a jean jacket. Just sayin!

- Caring for your jeans: I wash and dry my jeans inside out because it helps to preserve the denim. I also sometimes hang-dry them because yes, I am just that picky. Also, don't wash them with lighter colors! You probably already know that, but just making sure...
