Do I have a Hat Head?

I was posed the question this week of how we know which types of hats look good on us. A friend mentioned that she loves the idea of wearing hats, but doesn't feel like she looks good in them. My answer to that: you have to find the right hat. In my experience, not every hat you try on will look flattering, but that is not an indication that you can't wear them at all. It just takes a bit of exploring. So here's a bit of research I've done on different types of hats and styles to try.

FEDORA

This is a popular type of hat you might see in many stores. It has this Indian Jones-ish look to it, and is worn by both men and women. This comes in all different colors, textures, and fits - usually made of felt, and with some ribbon or band around the the brim. Also is usually pinched at the top.

BERET

The typical French painter hat. Typically made of wool or wool felt, berets are great in the cooler months, as they warm and hug your head. Notice some are fuller than others, so it's nice if you are looking for something to cover some or all of your hair at once. Try tucking all of your hair under, or look for one that you can pull more towards your forehead for a different look.

CLOCHE (rhymes with posh)

This bell-shaped, tight-fitting hat resembles those worn by women in the 1920's. The brim is worn low on the forehead. During the summer months, you will see this made out of straw to allow for a bit of ventilation. Pair with a bow or broche on the brim for a stylish finish.

Newsboy (aka Paperboy)

Fuller on top, as opposed to a flat cap (see below). Name comes from a hat typically worn by newspaper boys in the early 20th century. I would say this hat is the one to be careful with, since it is a very casual hat and may not actually elevate the chicness of your outfit, depending on what you are trying to achieve.

BUCKET

Resembles a fisherman's hat, made of canvas or cotton. Most popular during the summer months at the beach or camping outdoors. Adds a stylish flair to any casual outfit.

Cowboy

Ya... pretty much never a good idea..... ya.

WIDE BRIM

Wide brim, or big brimmed hats are a great way to block the sun and look very chic at the same time. Looks good on pretty much any face structure and with any outfit.

Neutrals with a Flare

One of the challenges of a wardrobe is having clothes that will match with a lot of different things. We may fall in love with something in the store, purchase it, and realize later that you have nothing to wear it with.

My solution to this problem is to keep plenty of clothes, tops and bottoms, that are neutral with a little bit of flare. I always try to look for pieces that have something special about them, like a ruffle or a bow, but are still neutral enough to be able to wear with a variety of different things.

This is a perfect example of 2 pieces that work wonderfully together, but can still be worn with many different outfits. Pairing them together will give you a chic business casual look. Throw the blouse over some jeans, or pair the skirt with a brown tank and flats for a casual weekend outfit.
Another huge plus about these pieces: they can be worn all year-round. No need to store them away for your more "wintery looking clothes".

And remember, it's quality over quantity. Pay the extra bucks for a well-made item that you will easily be able to wear over and over again. It will last you longer, and you will feel and look better in it.
