Shoes: the Tone of the Outfit

Shoes always create the tone of the outfit. That's why I find it helpful, when getting dressed, to choose what shoes I will wear first, and then build from there. Look through the images below and imagine what kind of outfit should go with them. It's true, right?

Each one of these shoes belong in a certain place and time. Don't we look a little goofy when we aren't wearing the appropriate shoes? (translation: no flipflops in the wintertime! I don't care that you're not cold; it's just wrong!) Remember to not only be conscious of the occasion you are dressing for, but also the material of the shoe, the height, and the overall appearance. (Scuff marks and worn-down heels should be fixed whenever possible.)

And remember the basics: casual outfit = casual shoes, dressy outfit = dressy shoes.... You have no idea how much I cringe when I see a perfectly put-together outfit worn with the sloppiest of sneakers!

Merry Christmas!

I hope you all have a wonderful, jolly, joyous, family-filled, happy, (and well-dressed!) Christmas!

Dresses with Tights

If there's one thing that fills my drawers during winter, it's tights. Wearing them under dresses or skirts is definitely my go-to choice for dressy and feminine outfits during the cold winter months. (Who says you have to wear pants when it's cold?)

I especially recommend getting them in varieties: thick and thin, bright colors, and different textures. See my favorite selections from Anthropologie's dress collection. (Pricey for some, I know, but they always have great sales.)

Also, pairing them with heels or ankle boots makes for such a classy touch!

Winter Hat Ideas

This kind of hat I just love to wear during the winter! Be sure to find one that fits your style! (Click here for a post on different types of hats). Here's a few cool choices (all from Target, around $15!):

And an extra tip for storage and care: do all you can to keep it's shape! Especially for the cloche hats, either buy a hat holder or keep them neatly on a closet shelf with the top of the hat faced down.

I hope you're able to find one to keep you warm and toasty!

Pressured to Shop?

Kyle and I had our first Black Friday adventure. Neither of us had ever done Black Friday shopping before, nor did we plan on doing it anytime soon, but perhaps it was continually seeing that empty spot in our room where a tv should go.... We have been wanting a tv since we got married 2 years ago, but never found one at the price we wanted (or were willing to pay). So after a spur of the moment decision at 11pm to check out Best Buy, and a 2 hour wait in the freezing cold, we finally came home with our first tv as a couple!

Although we partook in this decade old tradition, I can't help but comment about some of the silliness I've observed surrounding this new American "holiday". I am no different that any other consumer, but I draw the line when I hear of people missing Thanksgiving with their family just to be the first in line to their favorite store. The more and more our society hypes up this day, I wonder if it makes people feel pressured to hit the stores.

Clever advertisements can sneak into our mentality and make us think that this is the one and only day that people should do their shopping. Let's remember that whatever it is you are sacrificing your life for better be worth it (and to be honest, not that many things are). It all goes back to a piece of advice I always tell my friends - just because it's on sale, does not mean you have to buy it.

So I hope you stayed strong during these targeted ads and "to die for" deals. And if your itch carries through to Cyber Monday, just remember to shop smartly, shop with care, and shop with others in mind!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope you all had a wonderful day with family and friends! We spent our day playing Catch Phrase and Uno (uhum....I should say, winning Catch Phrase and Uno...). Now off to decorating for Christmas! Don't you just love this time of year?

Boots!

Boot season has officially begun! I love these booties from Anthropology. These kind of shoes look great with tights and a dress - very feminine, modern, and cute! Hope you're able to find your favorite pair this season.

The Purpose of Dressing Well

"Do not give people the opportunity to dismiss you or mistreat you by looking less than your best. That means everywhere, even to the grocery store," says writer Susan Fales-Hill in a Wall Street Journal article.

To Susan, it is second-nature, but to the rest of the general public, it is a topic that is hard to hit home. With so many Americans spending billions of dollars every year on fashion merchandise, why do so many people still have trouble looking put together on a daily basis? There seems to be a definite inconsistency here.

Living in a culture that tolerates pajama wearers at grocery stores leads us to believe that what we wear has no affect on other people. How we dress is a sure sign of respect for others, and ourselves. It can be difficult to regard our normal day to day activities as something to put effort into when it comes to dressing, but doing this can actually improve the way we perform those very activities.

A recent article from USA Today published a study conducted on college students taking their final exams. Results showed that those students who were dressed well to the exam actually performed better. Why you ask? Simply put, dressing well gives you confidence. What we choose to wear has a direct effect on how we perform our regular tasks.

Amy Fine, style correspondent for Vanity Fair, recently said, "I appear to be the only one in my Pilates studio who changes in and out of workout clothes. The other clients appear to wear theirs to and from the sessions. I just can't do that. There's a kind of decorum of the street I like to follow." In other words, our clothes should correlate with what we are doing. Why don't pajamas belong in grocery stores? Because we wear them in the privacy of our home. To sleep in. Period. There is a reason why we wear jeans to garden, running shorts to exercise, aprons to cook in. The point is, our clothes have functionality; they serve a specific purpose. When we deviate from this, it actually shows others that we have little regard for what's appropriate. Maintaining this "I don't care what others think" mentality is just an excuse for laziness, sloppiness, and disrespect for those who have to interact with us.

Many of my friends who work from home tell me that they prefer to get dressed as if they are actually going to an office. The benefits of doing this is that it makes them more efficient, they treat their work more professionally, and keeps them more focused.  The truth is, when we feel confident that we look and feel our best, then that is exactly how we are going to treat our work. Doing this consistently every single day is where we will reap the benefits.

I remember an incident that happened to me recently at the college campus where I work. We had just gotten a new president, and I was waiting to make a grand first impression as soon as I had the chance. One day, I found myself walking in the same direction as this new president, and we were entirely alone. There was not another person in sight, and I knew that it was the perfect opportunity to approach him and hand him my business card. Except that as soon as I saw him coming my way, I fled in the other direction. I had chosen that particular day to dress in a long shirt and leggings - way too casual by every means - and was entirely too embarrassed to approach him. There went my shot at an amazing first impression.

The key then, is in being consistently put-together. Every day should be an occasion to look our best. Never allow ourselves a vacation from dressing presentable, even if it's for something as routine as a grocery run.

Finding Comfortable Heels

Bakers - Taylor Ankle Strap Pump

A coworker asked me recently about finding comfortable heels for work She explained that one of the main reasons why she doesn't wear them is because they ate just "sooooo uncomfortable" (does that sound like you?) My advice on this subject can be summed up in these points:

- First of all, avoid buying heels at cheap stores like H&M and Forever 21. Its not that you should never buy from there, its just that they don't always do the job. These stores are not shoe stores, and if you've ever bought heels from these places you will know what I'm talking about. They are uncomfortable as heck, they wear down easily, and we only end up wearing them once or twice before we toss them to Goodwill.

- Instead, invest in some quality heels that you really like. I personally like going to Bakers or Steve Madden, but the point is to spend a little more on shoes that will last.

- Once you finally purchase a pair you like, consider buying additional 'contraptions' that will make your feet even more happy. I'm talking about insoles and heel protectors, and other gadgets that you can add on. These things will vary on your specific needs for example, some of us need more support on the balls of your feet, while others need it on the back of your heel.

- Finally, once you've begun wearing your heels and notice them getting rundown, make time to take them to a show repair shop. It surprises me one and again at how many women just toss their shoes once the heel wears down instead of taking them to get fixed. Doing this actually saves you money, and gets you in the habit of taking better care of what you own. It only ever costs me about $15 or less to fix my heels, and there are numerous shops wherever you live.

So follow these tips if you're not already doing them, and I promise your your feet will thank you after your long day at work!

Yellow Inspiration

Wanted to post this outfit as a great example of how to pull off a monochromatic color palate.

And it's yellow! Love it!

Even Your Lunchpail Can Be Stylish!

This is my lunch-pail that I bring to the office everyday.  Found this cutie about a year ago at Bed, Bath, and Beyond for around $20. It actually has the insulated material inside to keep your food warm or cold, and a little pocket as well to carry utensils or napkins!

Professional Attire

Today was a big day for our university - the annual convocation event. This marks the official kickoff of the new school year, with a speech from the president, a recap of the successes of the previous year, and a vision for what the campus hopes to accomplish in the upcoming one.
For us little people, it meant a chance to mingle with the higher ups, get our faces known, and hope that they will remember our names. The trick is to convince others that your position actually matters. I mean, how can this operation go in without us, right?

Well, as with any event, we want to make sure that we are dressed appropriately for the occasion. Today's event called for professional attire. I've always found that this area of dress can be confusing for a lot of people ( business professional vs. business casual) and although you're guaranteed to see some wacky old professor who refuses to abide by any social standards, it doesn't mean that we can all be exceptions. The important thing to keep in mind when dressing in business attire is to achieve an overall crisp and clean look. Here are some points to consider when picking the right business appropriate outfit:

1. Don't be afraid to look your best. That means adding that blazer on top of the dress shirt, or wearing that nicer piece of jewelry. I tend to reserve certain pieces for those "professional" events, but the trick is to actually make sure you wear them! Many people are afraid that they look too dressed up, but hey, if you look amazing, then it's probably just fine.

2. Wear color. we don't have to stick with traditional black or navy pallats. Color is a very powerful tool that can help us stand out and enhance our best features (seasonal color analysis blog post to come!) one of the women i remember most from today's event was wearing a beautiful hot pink dress.
So remember, color is our friend.

3. It should fit like a glove. Nothing's worse than a jacket thats too loose, or a skirt thats too tight. Whatever it is you choose to wear, remember that fit is key.

4. Shoes should be professional and appropriate for the occasion. Cork material or anything that looks too summery should not be worn.

I am working on another blog post just about business professional vs business casual looks. Lot's of images, I promise!

Little Boutique Finds

I challenge you to try shopping in obscure boutiques if you ever get a chance. You can really find some of the most interesting and unique pieces to add to your wardrobe. I know living in the Inland Empire can make them hard to find, but this cute little Korean store called April Snow seemed to be mistakenly placed in a huge shopping mall. That's okay, it can stay. I don't mind at all.

It's Chambray Time

This is chambray, pronounced "sham-bray". I keep seeing this blouse on other style bloggers and wondered why I haven't jumped on the bandwagon. Until I realized that I do own a chambray shirt that's already 2 years old! Yes, I bought this originally for my engagement shoot, but never foresaw how popular it would get. (Does this mean I'm a trend-setter?) Haha, just kidding. But it did serve as a reminder that if you like something, then just go for it, because the world may just catch on. And if it doesn't, oh well, now you own something that you really like. Seems like a win-win to me.

Put Away the Flip-flops and Get Ready for Fall!

Living in Southern California can be a real joy with its beautiful weather almost all-year round. The summers are warm, the winters are cool, but you can pretty much always say that the weather is just right. I remember having a conversation with a friend who grew up in New York, where people actually get to experience the change of seasons. She pointed out that the obvious change of seasons can be really beneficial because it helps us to transition from one part of the year to the next.

This idea really got me thinking about how living in SoCal can be one long summer sometimes. We can get in routines that seem endless, and it's no help that the weather makes the days look the same. To counter that, we can look at the upcoming fall season as a time for change and self-improvement, especially when it comes to fashion.

What I love about the cooler weather is that people really raise the tone of their wardrobes- incorporating classier and and stylish pieces like scarves and coats. I also like how we get a better sense of how clothes should properly fit. Summertime clothes tend to make us women want to wear less, while winter weather allows us to dress warmer while still maintaining our sense of personal style.

Seeing fall fashions in the stores is getting me really excited! I hope this change of season will inspire many to put away those flip flops and shorts, and re-visit our looks for the fall.

Little Black Birdies

New top from H&M which features everything I like in a blouse - small print (birds at that!), a cute collar, and beige!

Speaking of prints, one piece of advice that I'd like to share is that if you have a smaller frame, then smaller prints will go better with you. Large prints (like huge flowers) on someone like me would look a bit dis-proportioned. Too loud, if you know what I mean!

Textures and Patterns

Investing in some items that have some interesting textures or patterns to them could really do wonders for our wardrobes. I've found that these details really enhance an outfit, and can really show our personalities.

These are just a few of my favorites that I've been wearing lately.
